Dupuy – Bache-Gabrielsen
August Dupuy set up his cognac house in 1852 in Jarnac, a small town to the east of Cognac. In 1885 he moved to Cognac, and 10 years later his company moved into a new house in Rue de Boston 32.
This traditional building still serves as the company’s headquarters, and the original interior decorations are still there. August eventually sold his company to Edmond Dupuy and the name of the company changed to A. Edmond Dupuy & Co. This was where the young Norwegian, Peter Anton Rustad from Ås in the municipality of Akershus, was employed as a travelling sales representative and correspondent in 1893. Four years later he was promoted to the position of Office Manager. In 1903 Peter Anton Rustad took over the company and formed his own cognac export business which operated under the name of Peter A. Rustad & Co.
In 1905 he invited the 22-year old Thomas Bache-Gabrielsen from Holmestrand to join him as a partner. The company has retained its name A. Edmond Dupuy & Co., and it celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2002! A. Edmond Dupuy cognac was marketed in Norway in parallel with Rustad and Bache-Gabrielsen cognac right up until the 1920s. The Dupuy label is still used today in France and for exports to countries outside Scandinavia. After Rustad died in 1916, Mrs Rustad and her daughters were gradually released from the company, but the name Rustad and Bache-Gabrielsen continued to be used right up until 1939.
